Algorithm	Characters	Size	Holds up?	Use it for
CRC32	8	32 bit	No. Anyone can build a second input with the same value.	Catching accidental corruption. It is a checksum, not a hash. Zip and PNG use it.
MD5	32	128 bit	No. Collisions have been cheap since 2004.	Matching files against old systems that only speak MD5. Never for signatures.
SHA-1	40	160 bit	No. A real collision was published in 2017.	Reading existing data: git object ids, old certificates. Do not start anything new on it.
SHA-256	64	256 bit	Yes. No practical attack.	The default. Signatures, integrity checks, anything new.
SHA-384	96	384 bit	Yes.	When something you talk to asks for 384 bits, usually TLS or a signing spec.
SHA-512	128	512 bit	Yes.	A longer digest, and faster than SHA-256 on 64 bit machines.

None of these are for storing passwords. They are built to be fast, which is exactly wrong for a password. Use bcrypt or argon2 on the server.
